This is a project which has been influenced by the rise in identity politics as a mainstream topic of conversation. As an empathetic artist, Sophie often questions the way in which society categorises individuals, consequently Black has racial identity at its core. These particular portraits deal with contemporary Black Masculinity in a stylised approach which withdraws from being overtly politicised. Juxtaposing preconceived dominant cultural ideologies of the black male with a calmness in aesthetic. The work goes beyond the limit of the given identity, shifting visual expectations to deliver a counter representation of the leading norm.
